Title IX isn’t changing, though. This bit is illustrative and sets up another challenge for Vanderbilt:

There will be other aspects of this decision to consider. Increasing baseball’s permissible full scholarships to 32-35 players has Title IX implications. If baseball finalizes that structure, softball will also be part of that process. Increasing full scholarships to 32-35 players will also affect every level of baseball, including the professional ranks.

I wonder if Vanderbilt will consider fielding a softball team, as a result? Duke formed one in the last 10 years, I believe, and they were reviled this year for being an upstart national power.

It would make me happy for Vanderbilt to be reviled as a national power.

I have been calling for this very thing for the last 20 years. It is ridiculous that Football and Basketball are FULLY funded with Scholis but baseball gets a grand total of 11.7 for 35 young men. Ridiculous and if schools cannot afford full schollis then maybe they need to drop baseball.

While this is good for the young men receiving the funding, this is going to cause major shifts in the landscape, some of which are not even know at this point. But here's a few:

Roster limit of 34. The key will be WHEN the roster limit is applied. If it is in the fall, some major programs, including Tennessee, will be hindered. Coaches won't be able to bring in 20 recruits each cycle, and then cut half of them after fall practice. Most SEC schools have, historically, had nearly 50 players in the fall. Vandy doesn't do that as much, but still does to an extent. If the roster limit isn't applied until the Spring, then this behavior won't change. What will definitely change is fewer spots on each team. Which means player evaluations will become much more important. No more being able to "miss" on half of a recruiting class and still expect to compete. I suspect this will push SEC teams even MORE into the transfer portal for players over taking high school recruits.

The gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" is about to grow significantly. In the SEC, we won't notice it too much as everyone will fund the max number of scholarships. In smaller conferences, the teams that can do it will be virtually unstoppable. For C-USA, Dallas Baptist will fund the max, and schools like MTSU will struggle to even fund 15. These investment differentials and revenue disparities are going to cause these competitive gaps to widen substantially.

So look for the power conference teams to get "older". High school players will be pushed to G5/DII/DIII/NAIA/Juco. It's just going to be a big change. Good in some ways, but not good in others.
