Hoggard Commitment

Post by Jason94 »

With the commitment of AJ Hoggard, it appears that our roster is set as far as scholarship athletes go for 2024-2025. Hoggard is a high major starter and a legit point guard. If you compare his numbers, it compares very well to Ezra Manjon, with a couple of caveats - he shoots a bit more from the perimeter than Manjon, and is decently accurate from the arc, and is not quite as accurate inside the arc, and didn't get to the line quite as frequently. He is definitely a pass first point guard and has been in the top 30 in assist rate in the nation in each of the last three seasons, finishing #1 two seasons ago and #6 last year. Otherwise, they are statistically very similar players despite being very different in terms of size.

From his highlights he is the same player as Manjon - he is much bigger and uses his size to get to the rim as opposed to an extremely quick first step. That is not to say he lacks quickness - he does appear to have a nice burst to the rim, but he uses his size to finish and is a stout 6'-4", 210 lbs. He looks like a player who is adept at pick and roll and fares well in transition - probably not so much of a scorer, but a player who is dangerous enough at scoring that he cannot be ignored. He had a very good steal rate and cut down his TO rate to the point where he is a steady ballhandler.

This is a very good addition because he essentially answers any questions we had about PG spot, in that he is a player who has proven he can play point in one of the most competitive leagues in the country, facing what is typically a top 15 schedule every season.

I this CMB has done a great job grabbing a bunch of really good guards and wings, and emphasized the ability to move the ball around and multiple players who can handle point guard responsibilities. Between Hoggard, Edwards, Huffman, and Collins we've added 4 players who have played or can handle the point guard position, and while Manon is not really a point guard, he handles and passes the ball very well. I cannot wait to see how these guys do when they get on campus.

I did not realize until today that new VU assistant Matt Bucklin is Tom Izzo's nephew.

Not that ironically, since JMU's new coach was the coach at Morehead State and was Freeman's coach there.

Jrue Holiday is 6-4 and a guard.

I'm not saying he's the next Jrue Holiday but I'm not - not saying it either. Just studying on it at this point.
