The non-Belmont related portal thread

Post by bhoyal »

New Mexico guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. has just entered the transfer portal, as a grad transfer.

The 6’2” guard started 28/28 games for the Mountain West tournament champs, averaging 14.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

Chad Venning (St Bonaventure) listed as 6-10/260 but looked taller on TV games

Averaged 13 & 5

Michael Ajayi 17/10 + 47% from three
and Jevon Porter 16/6 ( both Pepperdine )

Ajayi is 6-7 but is visiting Gonzaga and Ole Miss soon
Porter is 6-11 but his kinfolk played at Mizzou

Either would be a major get but might be tough to pull off.

Id keep an eye on William Kyle III 6’9” forward with a lot of athleticism and bounce from South Dakota State. Was Summit League DPOY. In his four years of coaching at JMU, Byington got a transfer from South Dakota State and University of North Dakota so he likes going to that well. William Kyle III would be a great fit in the system Byington likes to run too.

As mentioned in a different thread, Terrance Edwards from JMU is a big name to watch. 6’6” wing who is a scorer and adequate defender. Was the Sunbelt player of the year and could come over with Byington and help with the roster transition into Byington’s system (he was JMU’s leader this past season).

It sounds like the academics with the transfer portal can be tricky with Vandy, I’m not sure if Terrance Edwards actually graduated and would be a grad transfer or if he’s looking for one more year to finish his degree.

Dang, if he shaved his head and put on a Kentucky uniform, he would look just like his dad. Crazy...

Remember, there will probably be north of 1,500 players on the portal, even if you cut the list down to players who are 1) good enough to play in the SEC and 2) academically minded enough to make it into VU and have interest in a major that VU offers, there will probably still be hundreds of players that fit this description. It will be impossible to individually list all of them or even come close (though Bhoyal will probably try), so if we end up with a transfer that noone has listed, it doesn't mean anything. Nobody had heard of Manjon before he transferred, and he turned out great even if this season didn't. The odds are probably pretty high that players that end up transferring here will be players nobody on this board has heard of as of this moment. With 350+ schools with rosters consisting of ~13 scholarship players each, that is just too many players for anyone to have even passing knowledge of.

Yes, it's impossible to know about every kid in the portal, but why not have some fun with it. Not everything has to be misery and controversy.

Like the Sullinger kid at Kent State. Fun player to watch. He hasn't jumped to Ohio State yet where his relatives played, so you never know.

Also already mentioned in another thread, another fun guard to watch, the Boyd kid from DLU...

I agree it is fun, but just noting it is just that - it isn't like anyone has a direct line to the coach to see who they might be going after.

Dang, did his dad Marry a 4'-11" tall woman? JJ was 6'-5" and his uncle Jared is 6'-9" and he ends up 5'-10"?

Boyd OTOH is a player. Legit scorer that is both high usage and efficient.
