VM official Late Signing Day thread

Post by BrentVU »

How recently was it that the first Wednesday of February was a huge deal, with the for-pay recruiting sites going into overdrive? Not anymore. Today should be just the placing of a big bow on what has already been a very good recruiting class for Clark Lea.

The only announcement I'm expecting today from VU is the signing of 6-2, 300-pound DT Nikhil Jefferson of Tampa-- any time you sign a massive, mobile defensive lineman, it's a reason for rejoicing. That should put the signing class back up to 21 (six of whom are already in school right now). By my count, that puts Lea and Simmons right up to the 85-scholarship limit for the fall (by my count, not anybody else's).

But also, keep an eye on...
-- Jamezell Lassiter, 5-8 185 WR from Deerfield (Mass.) Academy committed to VU last Saturday, but the commitment was not acknowledged... meaning the commitment is probably either for a grayshirt or PWO.
-- Thomas Jones (PWO ATH from Smyrna) says he plans to participate in a signing day ceremony today at his school.
-- Likewise Johann Cardenas, RB from Houston-St. Thomas, will go through the motions at his school today (his real paperwork is already in). A teammate of his, Larry Benton III, will likely do the same for his PWO offer from Vandy.

We'll watch and report. And hey, it doesn't have to be just me. If you see something VU-related, post it here. (Or for other schools, if it might be of general interest.)

Chattanooga-McCallie (this year's Division II-AAA state champ) put off its formal football signing day ceremonies until today. In addition to Canadian QB Jay St-Hilaire going to Vandy (on the right), their signees also include Carson Gentle (UT) and Marcellus Barnes (Syracuse).

Vandy also currently has a junior commitment from McCallie, WR/DB Carson Lawrence, whom they hope they can hold onto until next December. This could well be the best football program in the state (in addition to one of the best academic schools), and it would be great to establish a pipeline.

If you're needing something to pass the time today while we're waiting for actual news, check out this basketball highlight reel for Joseph McVay, who signed with VU (to play football) last December out of Earle, Arkansas... guy's a phenom.

Also in HS basketball this week... VU football signee Brycen Coleman joined the career 1000-point club for his school, Stephen Decatur HS in Berlin, Maryland. Now get this... in his football career, he also had over 1000 yards passing, over 1000 yards rushing, and over 1000 yards receiving... amazing.

See you this fall, Brycen.

Nikhil Jefferson has signed... welcome home! He's 6-2, 300 D-lineman from Tampa-Berkeley Prep, Fla...

He played on a private school state championship team in Florida, his team knocked out Callahan Blair's Calvary Prep team...

As an aside, is there a more Vanderbilt name than Callahan Blair?

QB Whit Muschamp of Chattanooga-Baylor (third from left) got his paperwork in last December, but Wednesday was the formal celebration of all Baylor's athletes who got scholarships. And guess who else showed up-- Papa Will (currently co-defensive coordinator at Georgia, on right) showed up to celebrate his son's signing with Vanderbilt.

Coach Lea says of Nikhil Jefferson's signing:
"Excited for Nikhil to join us in Nashville! His high motor and ability to create havoc in the backfield will be a great addition to Coach Larry Black Jr.’s room. Congrats man! #EarnItEvery24"

I stand corrected on this-- about three weeks ago, Will (voluntarily, supposedly) moved from his co-defensive coordinator position at Georgia to an off-field role with the defense, similar to a role he had had previously. The decision, according to a statement released by Georgia, had something to do with his son starting his career at Vanderbilt. Sorry for the error, I had not heard this.
