Height, FWIW

Post by Jason94 »

From a height standpoint the roster looks like this:

Edwards - 6'-0"
Tanner - 6'-1"
Balil - 6'-2"
Collins - 6'-4"
Huffman - 6'-4
Hoggard - 6'-4"
Hemenway - 6'-4"
Manon - 6'-5"
Nickel - 6'-7"
McGlockton - 6'-7"
Roberts - 6'-8"
Carey - 6'-8"
Wright - 6'-9"

Here is an estimate of the average height of players at each position from the past season (utilizing kenpom's height data, looking at the teams that we in the average, and averaging the heights of their players listed at the most recent games played weight by the amount of minutes played be the players):

PG - 6'-2"
SG - 6'-2"
SF - 6'-5"
PF - 6'-7"
C - 6'-9"

This is including all NCAA D1 programs (not just high majors), FWIW. This does suggest that we could play Nickel at the PF in a pinch as a stretch 4 and he would not be giving up a huge amount of height against most teams. We should also have the ability to play large at the guards and wings at points, with a Hoggard or Huffman playing point, Collins or Manon at the 2 and Nickel at the 3. We would probably be better off had we added a little more post size, but we won't be small overall unless we are playing Edwards with the freshmen.

Without knowing exactly what the average height of all players all, the team with the median average height was aTm, which had an average height of 6'-5" (77.1"). For comparison, our average height last season was 76.8", or just below the median average height.

Height does increase the chances of a team making the tournament, especially at the top end. The top 10% of all teams (36 teams) had 17 teams make the tournament. Only 3 of the bottom 10% of all teams in height made the tournament. However, the 10th to 20th percentile had 9 teams make the tournament, and only 5 teams in the 20th to 30th percentile made the tournament. The 30th to 40th percentile had another 4 teams make the tournament and the 40th to 50th percentile had 8 teams make the tournament. From 50th to 60th another 7 teams made the tournament.

If your team does not have the height that is in the top 20% of all teams, it might be better to have a team that it more at the median, and it would be interesting to see how these numbers look when you look at previous seasons.

One major difference at least early is that CMB does seem to like taller guards compared to CJS. CJS recruited a very large number of guards in his 5 seasons, and 8 of them were 6'-2" or shorter. Two of the three players on the new roster shorter than 6'-4" were originally recruited by CJS. OTOH, of the 6 guards that CMB recruited from the portal, only Edwards is shorter than 6'-4". It is not quite a fair comparison as the guards that CMB is recruiting are going to be on the same team, while the guards that CJS recruited didn't all play together. But it did seem intentional that CMB was looking for taller guards.
