FWIW - 4/17 Vandysports Podcast

Post by Jason94 »

Some discussion on the addition of Collins, additional discussion on potential starting lineup. In the starting lineup discussion two additional names were brought up:

Jaeden Zackery - 6'-2" PG from BC
Devin McGlockton - 6'-7" SF/PF also from BC.

What was interesting is that they brought up Zackery as the potential starting PG, which is interesting to say the least - anyone hear anything about either player being interested in Vanderbilt or previous ties to CMB?

As a side note, I don't worry about CMB using his relationships in grabbing players from the portal - it would be great to have a coach who has strong enough relationships that it makes a difference in bringing in players.

Zackery shot 40% from three last season. He had 8 assists against us last fall. His high game was 22 vs Clemson.

He would be a great get, just not sure if this is just wishful thinking or if it is a real possibility.

We NEED a 7-footer or at least 6'11" to protect the middle. 6'8" guys did not work for us in the past at the 5....

Cooper Flagg has a 4.1 gpa and he's "pretty good" but he's "only" 6-10 so even if he decommits from Duke, we can't have him. Right?

Ross Neltner was listed at 6'-9" when he played center for our 2007 team; Chris Lawson was a lumbering 6'-10" that was not much of a rim protector for the 1993 SEC Championship team. Dawid Prybyszewski played less than 20 mpg for the 2004 team but was more of an inside out guy.

Good size at the 2-4 spots can overcome to some extent a lack of size at the 5. The 2007 team didn't even have size at the 4 with Dan Cage essentially playing the 4.

6"10" works even.....Neltner and Lawson were in a different time....much has changed....numerous more 7 footers ....be serious guys. Don't always try to zap someone & parse words...you know exactly what I am talking about!!! A 6'10" guy like Lang that can't jump doesn't help....

Why were people so bent out of shape over losing 6-10 QMB for a year?

(yes, a 6-10 guy with long arms who can jump over a phone book and a modicum of athletic talent would help and the portal still has them)

This is not nitpicking - here is a list of high major teams from this year's tournment that didn't have a center taller than 6'-9" playing more than 10 mpg:

Houston
USC
SDSU
aTm
UAB

This doesn't include mid-major teams from 1 bid conferences that also had centers shorter than the center we had this season. So no, I don't know exactly what you are talking about, because I believe that you can field a good team without a 7' tall traditional center. Just because most teams play and recruit one way doesn't mean that it is the only way to be successful.

OK....let me rephrase it! We need a rim protector!!! Period! Good grief! Tell me what we need then? To play the 5?
